SAFETY HARBOR GARDEN CLUB
Membership Meeting
July 17, 2019
The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m.
Sharen introduced our visitor Becky.
Treasurer’s Report: Pat Gilliland gave a combined report for May and June. The balance as of April 30, 2019 was $2,683.12. Total income was $129.00.This included income from Membership (75.00), Picnic Auction ($3.00) and proceeds from Moccasin Lake plant sale. ($51.00) This money will be kept separate
and distributed at the end of the year. Expenses included $50.00 to Gary Sawelle for the teepee at the butterfly garden in Mullet Park. The balance as of June 30, 2019 was $2,762.12.
Membership: No report for this meeting. A report regarding the total number of members will be given at the August Membership Meeting.
Mullet Creek Park: Gisela Bennie thanked the members who participated in the weeding and trimming of the four plots that the garden club maintains at the park. She also thanked Gary Sawtelle for building a third teepee for the butterfly garden.
Safety Harbor Garden Club Award: Gisela reported that Jo Clark’s yard has been given the Garden Club Award. The award is given every two to three months. She encouraged members to keep a look out for pretty yards. A prerequisite for the award is that the yard is visible from the street and planted by the owner. A sign will be placed in the yard and pictures will be published on the SHGC website.
Folly Farms Nature Preserve: Gisela reported that there will be an event on Monday, August 19, 2019 at the farm. Work will be done on eliminating the air potatoes that are already growing at the nature preserve. A Plant and Seed Swap will take place on Saturday, August 10, 2019. Sharen will get more
information. Please check the Safety Harbor Garden Club website.
Tamiami International Orchid Festival: Sharen asked for a show of hands to see if any members would be interested in going the Orchid Festival on Friday, January 17, 2020. We would partner with the Orchid Society to travel to Miami. The bus would leave at 4:30 a.m. and return around 7:30 p.m. About eight people showed interest in the trip.
Safety Harbor Garden Club Plant Sale: Leslie Zambito will chair the plant sale to be held in December.The theme this year will be Pollinators and Butterfly Plants. A clean up will be held at Sandy Huff’s to make room for the plants for the sale. Leslie requested money for the purchase of potting soil and
fertilizer. She also reported that Gary Sawtelle has permission from Safety Harbor to form a volunteer group for Folly Farms. He will need volunteers.
Nominating Committee: Sharen reported that a nominating committee needs to be formed to seek volunteers to fill board positions for the coming year. The positions of president, 1 st vice-president and two treasurers will need to be filled. She suggested that the newly elected officers work with the current
board before they take office.
Discussion: Information regarding the Christmas Party will be tabled until the August Membership meeting.
A home is needed for a sweet cat.
Program: Carol DeBoer introduced Davis Byrkit from Wilcox Nursery. Davis presented a program about the beneficial nature of native plants and how to use them in your home garden. Plants were available
for purchase.
